![]() Egress problems include crowded situations, limited exits, locked exits or other exit problems, as well as mechanical obstacles to the exit. Fire pattern factors involve situations in which exits are blocked by smoke and flame, vision is blocked or impaired by smoke, and civilians are trapped above or below the fire. Fire Administration and the most recent data, the most notable factors that contributed to fatalities were fire pattern, egress problems and escape problems. We have to remember as a firefighter, it’s THEM before US.Įvery year, more than 80 percent of all civilian fire fatalities occur as a result of fires in private homes. With today’s lightweight construction and synthetic building and content materials, an aggressive search is even more critical to civilian life safety. Search and Rescue operations need to be at the top of the response priorities when answering a call to a structure fire. We have to be better than this and we will, but on the way we need to learn, train and realize that tactics used 20+ years ago will not always work today. They see the fire and all that is thought of is – JOBTOWN BROTHERS! Ummmm… No. This is an example of Tunnel Vision! It’s like a moth to a flame. There are numerous videos on the internet and social media of departments all around the United States showing an engine company pull up, fire is blowing out the window’s on the B/C corner and the first thing that is done is the company pulls a preconnect and starts fighting the fire, alot of times from the outside without ever making an interior attack. ![]() So what do I mean by the “Red” aspect? Well, basically when I say red, its just what we think…. Common sense right? Well you would think that, but it seems that alot of departments over the years have got away from the “life” aspect and focused more on the “Red” aspect when arriving on the scene of a structure fire. A firefighters mission is to protect life and property.
